Moms, Minivans, & Messes had the pleasure of interviewing and featuring Canada’s own Carol Brucks. We are featuring this stay at home mom by interviewing her on her personal opinion on the everyday life of a stay at home mom.

Brucks Family Interview:

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: Describe your family (# of children, sex of children, and how long you and your spouse have been together)

Mama Brucks: Our family consists of 6 people and 2 cats! We have four kids. Our oldest is 5, boy, then its a girl at age 4, boy age 3 and another boy age 1.5. My husband and I have been married 8 years!

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: What do you miss about life prior to kids?

Mama Brucks: I miss teaching one on one, being a SAHM I am not currently teaching. I also miss being able to just jump in the car and go somewhere quickly….everything requires a large diaper bag these days!

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: What will you do different with your kids than your parents did with you?

Mama Brucks: I am trying very hard to keep yelling out of our home ( although this is a work in progress), and am looking to keep God at the centre ( My mom did her best with this, but my father was not on board.)

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: What was the deciding factor to becoming a permanent SAHM(Stay at home mom)?

Mama Brucks: We always knew that if we could have me stay at home, I would as I know that having that time with my kids was important. I wanted to be the one training them up and teaching them about the world around them. Although not impossible, its much harder when the kids are in childcare throughout the day.

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: How well do you think you handle being a parent?

Mama Brucks: If you asked me this a couple years ago, I would say horribly, I was overwhelmed with diaper changes and tantrums…now that my older two are past that stage, I feel that I can finally breathe and am able to think before I act in tough situations.

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: What was your first motherhood panic?

Mama Brucks: Day ONE! We brought home our oldest and breastfeeding was going well already so I told my husband to sleep in the living room while I took care of our baby throughout the night! BIG MISTAKE! He wouldn’t latch at all and had been crying for hours! My husband was in a deep sleep and couldn’t hear him at all. I was crazy worked up over it all and went to go change his bum. When I opened the diaper there was dried reddish pink splotches inside the diaper! I panicked and thought it was dried blood so I screamed from the bathroom and ran to wake up my husband. Turns out it was just a chemical reaction between our baby’s uric acid level being high in his urine and the brand of diapers we were using…and apparently was perfectly normal in the first few days!! Let’s just say, I felt a little foolish, lol!

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: When do you find time to yourself?

Mama Brucks: I have realized that you will never find time, you need to make it! We started putting our kids to bed at 7pm instead of 8 so that we had a few extra minutes to ourselves in the night..this gives me 30min each evening to just veg out and relax. I just recently starting getting up before my kids ( about 45min) in the morning and am enjoying that quiet time as well. I would not recommend trying to do that during the infant stages though..get all the sleep you can get! I also love to go out with my girlfriends at least twice a month! My husband is more than willing to be available whenever I am looking to go out, but I won’t hesitate to hire a babysitter for those times if he has to work!

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: How do you picture your kids in 10 years time?

Mama Brucks: Oh gosh! Teenagers?!! I am still trying to get my head wrapped around them all being school age at some point, lol! I guess I picture them lending a hand when needed to anyone around. Being academically successful in their own way and pursuing God in some form or another. I pray that they use their teen years wisely as its a chance to try out different paths in life while still under the safety of the home (and praying those paths are all ones that God would approve of!!)

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: What is the hardest part about being a mom?

Mama Brucks: Realizing how selfish of a person I can be. I find myself battling with “My” time vs. the kids time. I also find balancing all the different hats I wear in a day with just being there to play with my kids.

Moms, Minivans, & Messes: How does your spouse assist you around the home?

Mama Brucks: My husband runs our family business ( two actually) so he is very much the breadwinner, but he will lend a hand wherever necessary. He is a fabulous cook, can wash a mean load of laundry and fixes any of the things needing done around the home. He also assists me in bringing the fun into our home..he is definitely the goofy one out of the two of us!

Thank you Brucks Family for allowing me to interview your beautiful family! Also, a huge thanks to Branch & Twig for the beautiful picture of a lovely family!
